How I Used Colour to Tell a Story in My Short Film

If you’re like me — a movie fan, a film nerd, a cinephile, whatever you want to call it — you’ve probably seen those grids floating around social media showing colour palettes from your favourite films. Those posts always fascinated me. The way a single frame from La La Land or Blade Runner 2049 can communicate so much emotion just through colour.

And like a lot of filmmakers, I thought, one day I’ll use colour just like that. When I finally made my short film, I decided to make colour a storytelling tool rather than an afterthought.

So, in my latest video, I break down exactly how I built a colour palette for my film- from the basics of the colour wheel to how I used complementary and analogous schemes to evoke specific moods. I also talk about how you can approach colour to make your own projects more visually cohesive.
